You Never Know...

I've come to the realization that you just never know what your little people will come up with next.

I was packing Sir's lunch this morning, and Dolly was very much interested in 'helping' me. She carefully inspected the green pepper I was trying to slice paper thin strips from, cheerfully volunteered to sample the salami slices, and tried to charm me into giving her a piece of buttered bread before breakfast. Once I got the sandwich made and the leftover food secured again- ready to be put away, I started cutting up a piece of fruit.

Now, I do have a pretty good idea of what a lot of different fruits are called, but when it comes to the exotic specimens I'm basically stuck at Pineapple, Banana and Coconut (ok, I can do a little better than that, but you get the idea). Incidentally, the piece I decided to chop up to add to Sir's lunch today, happened to be some kind of tropical fruit. On Sunday someone had given me a bag of fruits and vegetables that they wouldn't be able to use before they returned home from vacation in a week. Thus my uncertainty regarding the type of fruit.

Anyway, I knew I was chopping either a Mango or a Papaya fruit this morning, but I wasn't sure which it really was. Dolly however, decided to quiz me on it. "What's that Mommy?" she chirped. "I'm not exactly sure," I replied "it's some kind of tropical fruit." "Is it an Angle?" she pressed. "An Angle?" I repeated "Do you mean angel?" I really had no idea what she thought it was.... it definitely didn't look like a side to a hexagon or triangle so why would she ask me if it was an angle? Then because grown-ups can be so dense sometimes she had to repeat the question, "Is it an Angle, Mommy? Can I have some?" The second time she used the word it sounded a bit more like 'ango'. I did know it was either a Papaya or Mango- but... she couldn't possibly know what a mango was could she?

Evidently she does know because as soon as I was done with Sir's lunch I looked up the differences between a Mango and a Papaya and discovered that Sir would be having a Mango with his lunch today. I think I've figured out how she learned what a Mango was finally. Grandma C. loves one of the tropical fruits, but I just couldn't remember which one it was. Now I think I know which one it is since Dolly would have asked what it was when sharing some of Grandma's fruit.

It never ceases to amaze me how fast little ones learn and how much they can absorb! You just never know what they're going to surprised you with next!

  1. Sometimes you just have to listen and not think about what it sounds like there saying. Not always the easiest task. What makes it worse is when they get frustrated that you're not understanding them.

  2. Dolly's so bright of course she remembers mango... and I have shared my mangoes a couple of times with her. That is if her begging most of the fruit can accurately be termed sharing! :) It's amazing how young they can be when they start "teaching" you.

  3. How cute! I wish I had some "ango" right now! It would be so refreshing.
